Qualified Medical Evaluations (QMEs)

QMEs are conducted by qualified physicians who are certified by the Division of Workers’ Compensation – Medical Unit to examine injured workers to evaluate disability and write medical-legal reports. The reports are used to determine an injured worker’s eligibility for workers’ compensation benefits. Approved QME professionals include medical doctors, doctors of osteopathy, doctors of chiropractic, dentists, optometrists, podiatrists, psychologists and acupuncturists.  Learn more.

Agreed Medical Evaluations (AMEs)

AMEs are necessary when an employee’s workers compensation insurance company require the expert opinion of a medical professional to evaluate the employee’s disability or impairment. The medical professional is the sole decider as to whether or not there is any impairment or disability and the extent to which the employee is impaired or disabled as a result of an injury at work. Independent Medical Examinations (IMEs)

IMEs occur when a medical expert who has not previously been involved in an individuals care provides an examination. There is no doctor/therapist-patient relationship.  IMEs are conducted to determine the cause, extent and medical treatment of a work-related or other injury where liability is at issue; whether an individual has reached maximum benefit from treatment; and whether any permanent impairment remains after treatment. An IME may be conducted at the request of an employer or an insurance carrier to obtain an independent opinion of the clinical status of the individual. In the State of California, insurance companies have a legal right to this request.
